!!!!!! ATTENTION:::: Parents and Athletes, Please understand that we did not hold the meet in the rain because we are trying to be mean or because we like rain better than sunshine.  If the girls meet was not held on Wednesday 5/9, we would no have been able to run it until AT LEAST the following Friday.  That meet decided the league title and it would not have been in the best interest of the girls if we postponed it.  5/10 there is a lacrosse game and two contests can not be held at the same time, friday 5/11 is the day before many girls last invitationals, Monday 5/14 is the day before Freshman Sophomore Champs, Tuesday IS the freshman Sophomore Champs, Wednesday is Prom, Thursday is day after Prom, and Friday 5/18, the next available day, we do not have school and it is a holy day.  The dual meet season needed to end yesterday.  I hope everyone understands.  If you have a problem with your daughter competing in the rain...I am sorry...Its just water.  Track meets can go on as long as there is not lightning.  If you want you can contact Coach Gregg through the "contact" section of this website".  Sorry you got wet.!!!!!!

###There has been a change to the schedule.  Saturday 5/12 for the boys is now at BAYPORT BLUEPOINT.  The other meet was cancelled due to lack of interest from schools.  Sorry for any trouble. ###

Congrats to recent Mercy Graduates on big time conference performances this past weekend.  Kayleigh Macchirole PR'd twice in 24 hours by running 58.8 in the open 4 and then a 58.2 on a leadoff leg of her ECAC qualifying relay.  Her relay ran 3:51 to qualify.

Olivia Schumann ran 58.40 to win her conference meet in the 400 meters and she also ran 26.9 to get 4th in the 200.  Congrats to her as well.

The Mercy girls competed against Port Jefferson on 5/9 for the league championship.  Much like the last few years, both teams came in undefeated and the winner would be crowned undefeated league champs.  As always, the anticipation was high and the pressure was on.  The weather was not cooperating but considering what it could have been, I dont think it was too bad at all.

The showdown got underway with the triple jump where senior Meg Donnelly grabbed a second place finish with her jump of 32+ feet.  It was off her personal best but jumping into a wet pit is difficult.  Port jeff has a 35 foot jumper that "only" managed a 33'7 jump.

The 100 hurdles followed and Senior Captain Tori Tremble continued her awesome final season by once again, winning her specialty event.  Tori lost one dual meet this year and it was when she was working on a three step approach and she messed up a beginning hurdle.  I want to send out a special thanks/congrats to Tori for working so hard on her event.  She coaches herself on a lot of days and her flexibility and speed are WAY ahead of where they have ever been.  Great job this year Tori, you deserve every second (or tenth of a second) you cut off.

Event three was the 1500 where 8th grader Meg Tuthill and Senior Emily Venesina squared off against Mairead Swords from Port Jeff.  Swords is there best distance runner and was a big time opponent to Isabella Franz in 2011 in the 1500 where they both ran 5:15-5:16.  Meg and Emily were told to try and win the race as easily as possible.  Swords probably remembered the year before when Franz passed her right near the end in a fast race and didnt want it to happen again so she slowed the pace WAY down.  The girls were running extremely slow through 2 and 3/4 laps.  Once they heard the gun which was the signal to start the last lap, all three of them took off in an all out sprint.  They fought each other down the backstretch where Tuthill took the lead and Venesina bided her time and waited a little longer.  Coming into the homestretch it was Tuthill, Venesina and Swords right behind.  The Mercy girls kept their form and prevailed over the very game opponent to get the first and second.  They ran their last lap in 65 seconds which is a new personal best for Meg, one second off Emily's personal best and it would have gotten 3rd! in the open 400 meters.  Awesome race girls.

Speaking of the 400, senior captain Sasa Vann was running her last individual race at Mercy.  She went out exactly as she should have, with a win.  Vann traversed the one lap race in 60.6 for a comfortable win over 9th grader Delaney Macchirole who proved her 63.65 at saint anthony's was no fluke as she ran a 63.8 in the rainy conditions.

Danisha Carter and Tremble were Mercy's two big guns in the 100 meters which followed the 400.  Carter snuck in for the win in 13.5 and Tremble followed right behind outleaning Port Jeff's first girl to win the event for the Monarchs 8-1.

Colleen Edwards threw down her best time of the spring in the racewalk by completing the race in 8:33.5.   She won over Port Jeff's Anastasia Konstantinidis who hung on over Jackie Read for second.  Mercy won this event 6-3 as well.

The 800 was next on the agenda for the Monarchs and leading the charge were Delina Auciello, Katrina Thomson, and Tiffany Holahan.  They actually swept the event 9-0 with Auciello getting the win in 2:32 followed by Thomson in 2:38 and Holahan in 2:41.  Great job girls.

The 200 proved to be the only race on the track that the Mercy girls did not win.  Danisha Carter finished second in 27.8 which is a very good time but Port Jeff has a few good 200 meter girls who thwarted her attempt at victory.  Macchirole was second and Mercy got a big PR from Freshman Marta (fill in crazy polish last name with 5 consecutive consonants) Wysinski who ran 31.5 from the second heat.

Tremble came back in the 400 hurdles to get another narrow win in 72.5 seconds, which on her third race of the day is a very good time.  She ended her senior dual meet season undefeated in the 400 hurdles.  Shannon Nunez also recorded a personal best running by herself in the third heat.

Senior captain Lauren Valle nabbed a win in her final race in front of the raucous home crowd by winning the 3000 meters in 12:17.  Tuthill completed her fine double by getting second.

Mercy's discus crew took a sweep and all recorded throws in the 70 foot or more range.  And they also went 2-3 in shot put where Catherine Andes and Meg Donnelly put a couple of 26 foot throws out there.  Very nice job throwers.  They dominated PJ 13-5 in their two events.

Port Jeff took the long jump over Mercy 8-1 but by then, the meet was pretty much over team wise.

The last event to finish up was the High Jump where Junior Dani Gehring got a two inch personal best of 4 foot 8.  This will almost definitely qualify her for divisions and the state qualifier.  Meg Donnelly grabbed a third in the high jump to cancel out Port Jeff's win in the event.

The two teams split the two relays (Port Jeff chose not to run 4x8) with PJ winning the 4x1 and Mercy winning the 4x4.  The final score was 87-59 without the 4x8 in there.  Congrats to the girls for taking another league championship and keeping their dual meet streak alive.

I want to give another special congratulations to the distance girls.   Before the meet I told them that the plan was to go either 1-2 or 1,2,3 in all of the events they were in and to win the 4x4 and 4x8 using some of them too.  They stepped up big and did exactly that.  The girls went 8-1, 9-0, 8-1, and won the 4x4 in the 1500, 800, and 3000.  Great job girls.  They outscored PJ 25-2 in the open events and 30-2 if you include the relays.

Next up for the Monarchs are the post season meets and this Saturday's invitational at Bellport.  We would like to get as many athletes as pos

The Mercy Boys had their last dual meet of 2012 on Tuesday.  It was Senior day but since it was not held at Mercy, the coaches chose to honor the boys and girls together after the last home meet of the season which is held Wednesday May 9th.  The seniors were allowed to chose whatever events they wanted to run with a small amount of restrictions.  The meet was against Port Jeff and Port Jeff is the defending small school county champions so this meet wasnt about the team score.  It was about young men having good performances, having a good time, and hopefully enjoying a meet with their friends for one of the last times in their lives.

Junior Paul nabbed a second place in the LJ by launching himself over the 18 foot barrier for probably the 7th or 8th time this season.  Jay Marano finished right behind him just over 18 feet as well.

Luis Cintron finished third behind Port Jeff's two stud hurdlers in 18.0 on a windy day.  With an improved three step approach, he could be a force in the next two years in this event.

Matt Abazis and Pat Derenze finished third and fourth in the mile run when Abazis ran 4:55 and Derenze ran 5:04.  Abazis narrowly missed out on second place when Fred Agistino from PJ outleaned him at the tape.  This was Abazis' third time under five minutes this season.

Junior Paul and Elijah Louis went 2-3 in the 100 when they ran 12.5 and 12.7.  Under 13 seconds is a solid time, both look to improve upon this in the last couple of meets.  The team certainly missed 100-200 specialist, Tom Kent who was home due to sickness.  Paul also had Mercy's only event victory when he dominated the high jump in 5'2.

Brian Merle ran his last open race at a dual meet in the 400 when he ran 59.2 for a third place finish.  This ties Merle's best time.  Merle also competed in the HJ where he placed second and the 4x1 where Mercy placed second.

Chris Williams continued his improvement in the 800 meters when he ran a 2 second PR of 2:38.  Congrats Chris.  He has been working hard on his mid distance.

Luis Cintron had a big breakthrough in the 400 hurdles.  He skipped the 63 second step and got down to 62.7 which qualifies him for the best of season list on just-in-time-racing.com.  He is Mercy's 11th entry on the site.  Many more than they had last year.

Pat Derenze, Elijah Louis and Andrew Glasgow all had strong showings in the 200 meters.  Running between 25.4 and 26.5.

Riley Joinnides had another BIG PR in the 3200 meter run (2 mile) when he ran an 11:29.2.  This is the second week in a row where Riley ran 15 seconds better than his previous best.  When he realizes that the two mile is a huge training tool for the mile and for the 800, he will really start to excel.  Congrats Riley.  Brian Willett who has been nursing a calf and hamstring injury lately cruised a two mile in 11:43.  He actually looked pretty comfortable even though he was just doing it for "mileage".  With the end of the season coming up, the team is hoping to have him back at full strength soon.

Rob Folkes-Gehring had another PR in the shotput.  He is creeping closer and closer to John Desuno's school record from last year.  Keep it up Rob.  Andrew Schlosberg also proved that his shot last weekend was no fluke when he threw a 38+ throw and then an even further one on his last attempt but fouled.  Great breakthrough for Andrew.

Matt Abazis nabbed a second place finish on his last jump in the triple jump when he eclipsed the 38 foot mark once again.  Well done Matt.

**Coming up in the next few weeks there will be  a comparison of last years team and this years team.  The boys dual meet record did not improve this year.  However, there was not a big emphasis on the dual meet schedule. Unless youre competing for a league title I have always believed that it is in the best interest of the athletes to run them in what event will MAKE THEM BETTER.  Having guys double, triple, and quadruple at every dual meet is not in the best interest of the athlete.  When the comparison is made, I hope many of you see how much better this years team has been than previous years.  Track and field (and sports in general) is about improvement.  If you keep  improving your own craft, you will eventually be very tough to beat.  **

The Saint Anthony's invitational was two very long day for athletes and coaches, but the Monarchs were rewarded with a plethora of personal best times and distances.  Instead of recapping every single event, I will provide a list of seasonal or personal bests below:

100 Hurdles: Tori Tremble 16.86 (Personal Record by almost a half second and new school record, congrats!)

100m- Tom Kent 11.88, his fastest FAT (Fully Automatic Timing) time.  Julianna Lenardo 14.50.

200m- Delaney Macchirole recorded a new PR as well as Danisha Carter.  Tom Kent also became the first Mercy sprinter on the boys side in the last two years to appear on the Best Of Season list when he ran 23.92 to finish 4th,

400m- Delaney Macchirole scored a huge PR of 63.65 to come in a close second in her heat.  Lindsey Woodhull had a breakthrough where she completely skipped the 68 second range and went right to 67.  there was a big smile on her face after that race for the first time in a while.  It was nice to see as a coach.  Danisha Carter ran 64.88, Jay Marano ran 55.1, Tom Kent ran 53.5, Meg Bassone ran 68 for a new PR, Delina Auciello ran 61.01 to record a big personal best and Sasa Vann made a great return after a few weeks of injuries by running 59.84 to win the unseeded section.

800m- Meg Tuthill ran 2:24 to PR by 5+ seconds and run the second fastest time in school history.  Emily Venesina ran 2:28.3 to PR by 2+ seconds, Lauren Valle broke through in the 800 by running 2:35 and getting on the best of season list.  Katrina Thompson and Tiffany Holahan also broke 2:40 by running 2:38 and 2:39 respectively.  Emily Yakoboski was victorious in her 4 week battle with the 2:45 barrier when she ran 2:42.  Matt Abazis, Pat Derenze and Riley Joinnides all PR'd and Abazis nabbed his 5th??  school record this season when he ran 2:04.92 to place 6th.  Derenze ran 2:12 and Riley ran 2:15. Chris Williams also PR'd in the next heat.

1500/1600- Meg Tuthill set a new school record when she ran a PR of 5:02.74 in the fastest section of the meet on Saturday.  Emily Venesina ran her second fastest time ever in 5:10. Lauren Valle ran 5:28 to dip under her PR, Jen Perugi also PR'd and ran 5:52 as well as Ashley Yakoboski when she ran 5:40.0.  Abazis set his second school record in two days when he ran 4:47 in the mile.  Joinnides joined the sub 5 club when he ran 4:58.  He ran a very smart and patient race to sneak under 5.

4x400- The boys set a new school record when they ran 3:39 despite missing one of their stronger legs due to injury.  Way to step up guys, and congrats!

SP- Andrew Schlosberg had a monster throw in the Saturday morning section when he chucked the shot 39 feet.  He PR'd by so much his father didnt believe him for a few hours.

Racewalk- Jackie Read has threatened to not visit the site anymore if her 4 second race walk PR was not mentioned.  I need all the hits for this rinky dink internet pitstop as I can get so congrats Jackie Read.  She competed with an injury and was rewarded with a personal best.

To everyone who came and stayed most or all of the time, thank you.  Good job to all and we look forward to the dual meets this week weather permitting.

Tuesday May 1st marked the second to last dual meet for the Monarch Boys and Girls before their showdown with Port Jeff.  Both the boys and girls came away with the overall win against Babylon in a nice showing for the two teams.

The meet led off with the 400 hurdles where the girls went 1-2-3.  Tori Tremble continued her great senior year with the win in 79 seconds.  Shannon Nunez scored a new PR in 85.8 seconds and Liz "Mad Dog" Hartman followed with an 86 to secure third place.  The boys hurdlers went 1, 3 in the form of Luis Leonardo and Steve Keegan.  Both returning from injury, both ran very well.  They look to build on this momentum heading into the saint anthony's invite and then to Port Jeff.

The 1500/1600 were next and again, Mercy came away with wins in both events. Delina Auciello and Patrick Derenze both won their races and Emily Yakoboski moved into second before she was impeded by a Babylon runner who was not DQ'd.  Derenze, although not feeling well, used a 70 second last lap to outkick a game Babylon miler.

Tori Tremble came back to run her specialty event, the 100 hurdles where she was trying a new three step approach.  Her steps were messed up between the third and fourth hurdles and she had to readjust her race plan.  She switched back to a four step approach after a momentary pause in the race.  She has decided to work on a four step hurdle approach for the remainder of the year.   Francesca Viccari had a big breakthrough when she broke 22 seconds for the first time in the hurdles.  Congrats.  Luis Cintron ran a good hurdle race to secure the win for the boys.

Delaney Macchirole and Katrina Thompson went 1-2 for the girls 400 and Brian Willett and Tom Kent went 1-2 for the boys in the 400.  Willetts time is a new school record.  He ran the quarter mile race in 53.5 seconds after doing a workout the day before.  Big things are to come from him in the next few weeks.  Kent will return to his specialty this weekend and next week in the 100 and 200.

The fast sprints continued with the 100.  Andrew Glasgow, Elijah Louis, and Dale Kelly also had personal bests in the 100.  12.4, 12.4 and 13.2 for the 8th grader.  Danisha Carter continued her awesome debut season by grabbing second in the 100 in a 13.2.  She was followed by Julianna Leonardo in 14.3.

The 800 was the Matt Abazis show for the second dual meet in a row.  He got a new season best in an untested 2:12.  Junior Paul fulfilled his senior duties by completing an 800 with a nice finish.  Chris Williams also enjoyed some success in his first 800 ever.  The girls 800 was a Mercy sweep.  Tiffany Holohan led the field through 400 meters and then Meg Tuthill, Emily Venesina and Lauren  Valle went 1,2,3.  They were all tired from the days training that proceeded the meet.  They all ran between 5 and 7 miles the day before, four or more of them very hard.

The 200 was Brian Willetts second win of the day and he was followed by Matt Abazis who had very little time between this and his 800.  They both broke 25.5 with Willett running 24.4.  Danisha Carter threw down a HUGE PR in the 200 by blitzing it in 27.4 to grab a spot pretty high on the best of season list.  She may have found her event for the time being.  Delaney Macchirole also scored a new personal record of 28.2 to get on the best of season list.

Ashley Yakoboski and Jen Perugi went 1 and 3 in the 3000.  Yakoboski grabbed a PR in her last attempt (most likely) at the distance.  12:44 leading almost the entire race.  Great job Ashley.  Riley Joinnides also had a huge PR in the 2 mile.  He says he hates it but he keeps cutting time off.  This will only make his Mile better.  He has a big shot to get a few more PR's this weekend at Saint Anthonys.

The Shot Put was the spot where Catherine Andes chucked another personal best to get on the best of season list.  She heaved the shot 28 feet.  Bobby Folkes nabbed another win as well with a 38 foot throw.

The discus was the spot for yet another Andes PR, as well as Folkes.  Folkes threw above 110 feet for the first time in his life and is a mere 4+ feet from the best of season list.  Andes threw 86'11 and secured a spot among suffolks best.

The relays were for fun as Mercy had the meet won already thanks to a great day of running and field events.   Mercy won all 5 relays that were contested though.  Other good showings were from Meg Donnelly in the Triple Jump as well as Jay Marano, Elijah Louis, and Junior Paul in the jumps.

The last dual meet of the season for the boys is next Tuesday AT Port Jeff.  The girls have the dual meet the following day that decides the league title.  That meet is at Mercy at 4:30.  It is also senior da

4/26 to 4/28- This was a busy weekend for the Mercy Track and Field Team.  The girls 4x1 and 4x4 competed at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Thursday.  The boys competed there on Friday and Saturday.  The rest of the team competed at the Westhampton Beach Invitational on the 28th as well.  Penn was supposed to have some bad weather but it held off and ended up being alright except for a little cold and windy.  The girls 4x1 ran very well after a late lineup change which put Danisha Carter into the anchor position.  The girls ran 53.8.  Delaney Macchirole was thrown onto the 4x4 late too after Katrina Thompson had a bout with food poisoning.  The 4x4 ran exactly their seed time with a 4:15.  This will put them on to the best of season list and was faster than they expected as all four girls actually came away with PR's.  Tori Tremble had a great leadoff leg of 63.0, she handed off to Delaney Macchirole and she split a 66.3, who gave the stick to Emily Venesina and she split 64.1 and came around to handoff to Delina Auciello who split 61.9.

The boys stayed the next two days to run 47.9 in the 4x1.  The team of Rudfil Paul, Andrew Glasgow, Jay Marano and Tom Kent ran a season best despite a hectic day and night on Thursday.  The 4x4 came back on Saturday morning to go after a season best and school record at 9:15.  They would have had it without some bad luck from the second runner, senior captain Jay Marano.  Luis Cintron Leonardo lead off well in 57.3 and gave it to Marano who was cut off less than 30 meters into the race and because of that split 57.7, he handed off to Matt Abazis who split a 54.3 (he says he can go faster, most of us believe it too) and he gave it to Brian Willett  who recorded the fastest split for Mercy this season with a 53.9.

The Westhampton Invite is an annual meet for the Monarchs.  They were blessed with very good weather until very close to the end of the meet where it got much windier and a bit cold.  the morning session is boys only and the afternoon session belongs to the girls.  Highlights from the morning was ANOTHER 12 foot PR for Freshman Andrew Schlosberg.  His girlfriend barely gave him a congratulations so I will do it here, great job Andrew, keep up the hard work.  Pat Derenze just missed the 5 minute barrier in the mile by running 5:03.  Steve Keegan placed second in the novice division of the hurdles DESPITE falling.  A lot of the team was still at Penn Relays so the teams depth was not what it usually is.

The girls (because of the Thursday schedule of their Penn races) were in full force for the most part.  Senior Captain Tori Tremble ran a nice PR in the 400 hurdles (her second PR of the weekend) and ran solid in the 100 and 100 hurdles.  Danisha Carter and Delaney Macchirole look like a big part of the Mercy girls sprint corps the next few years.  Carter and Macchirole both broke 14 and 29 by large margins in the 100 and 200.  Macchirole then ran a BIG PR in the 400 as the leadoff leg of the relay by recording a 65.3 split from a scratch start.  Maraid Glynn chucked that metal frisbee 82 feet for a very large PR in the discus.  Meghan Donnelly had nice marks in the triple jump and shot put but was disappointed because she didnt PR.

The distance girls also had a big day.   Emily Yakoboski fought allergies and just missed her best in the 800 but came back later and split a PR of 74 in the 4x4.  Her sister Ashley knocked a few seconds off her 1500 PR by running a 5:43 and also splitting a 74.  Tiffany Holahan finished second in her heat and her senior year has been going very well (post Italy vacation).  Holahan has been having great workouts and races in the last week or two and has a goal of making Divisions.

Delina Auciello got her first meet win (at an invitational) by out-kicking east end foe Shanna Heaney in the last 100 meters of the 800.  She knocked 2.7 seconds off her PR from last year and ran a school record of 2:22.26 which will surely get her into the division and state qualifier.  Senior Emily Venesina recorded an 11 second PR in the 1500 by running a 5:10.01 to just miss the school record in the 1500.  She will get another chance next week at the Saint Anthony's meet.  8th grader Meg Tuthill ran the second fastest time in the 3000 in school history by recording an 11:17 to finish in the top 6 of the meet.  Tuthill is still learning the event and will get more chances later in the season.  The 11 minute barrier is right there and after this 29 second PR, she can surely cut more time off.  Lauren Valle ran her second fastest time ever by running an 11:56.0 and looks to PR in the next couple of weeks.

The Monarchs have their second to last dual meet on TUESDAY (listed on the schedule as Thursday but it is changed) against Babylon.  Boys and girls at the same time at Mercy.  Good luck to them at that meet.  Friday and Saturday they have their biggest in season invitational at Saint Anthony's.

4/24- The Mercy Boys faced off against Center Moriches in the rain rescheduled dual meet.  The meet was rescheduled due to a moss/mildew type substance that forms on their track due to rain.  Since it rained more than an inch on Sunday, the coach of CM decided it'd be best to postpone.  Considering Mercy has a plethora of injuries, it was probably a good idea.

The boys competed great considering sickness and injury to many guys on the team.  The meet started off with Junior Rudfil, despite competing with a hurt knee long jumping just shy of 19 feet to take second.

Steve Keegan stepped up to do both hurdle races because of injuries to Mercy's other two hurdlers.  Keegan grabbed a third place and a second place in the 110 and 400 hurdles to keep Mercy from being swept in them.

Brian Willett, despite having no idea what was going on around him or in his event became the second Mercy Athlete to break 5 minutes in the mile when he ran a 4:56.5 to win.  Willett waited patiently behind CM first runner and then struck in the last 100 meters to get the victory.  Willetts last lap was a pretty quick, 69 seconds.  He has plenty more time to drop the rest of the season and although he will probably not read this paragraph, WILL be running the mile a couple more times.  Willett's time seems to be the third fastest in school history.  Riley Joinnides ran a 7+ second PR as well to get third place in 5:07.

Jay Marano, Andrew Glasgow and Junior Rudfil all broke 12.8 seconds in the 100.  Marano lead the way with a 12.3 to take third place. Rudfil was shut down after this event because of his injured knee.  The team hopes to have him back for Penn Relays on Friday.

Despite being Mercy's only athlete in the 800 meters, Matt Abazis dominated to win by over ten seconds in 2:14.3.  Abazis was hoping for a better time but this was a very windy day and CM put their best distance runners in other events.  His second lap was much faster than his first.

Tom Kent and Dale Kelly were the 400 meter entrants for Mercy.  Both relatively new comers to the event.  Kent has never done the event and Kelly has only done it once or twice.  Competed well.  Kent ran the fastest time in school history with a 54.5 to take third.  Kent took about 60 minutes to catch his breath after the races completion but, like Willett, WILL be running this event again.

Jay Marano lead the way for the Monarchs again in the 200 taking second place in a personal best 24.3.  Jay continued his solid senior season and surely has more personal bests ahead of him.

The throwers took down CM in their two events 11-7 behind two strong performances from Bobby "I run about as fast as my girlfriend does" Folkes.  Folkes threw over 40 feet for the first time in his 17 year existence.  He also threw 95 feet in the disc.  Freshman Andrew Schlosberg chucked that 2+ pound frisbee 91 feet for a HUGE PR.  Congrats guys.

Matt Abazis claimed his second school record in as many meets by hop, skipping, and jumping 38'8 inches to get second place in the Triple Jump.  Elijah Louis also scored a PR by an inch or two with a 35'6.5.

The highlight of the meet for the boys (and their coach) was a VERY unexpected school record in the 4x4.  We scratched the 4x8 because of injuries so we loaded up a few good guys in the 4x400.  Sprint Coach Tricia Nunez has the guys fit and ready to go for the second half of the season.  Matt Abazis waltzed over from his TJ school record and ran a 54.3 leadoff leg (that could have even been better if he got out a bit faster), he handed off to Matt Haughn who split 57.0 in his best race of the season by far to give senior captain Jay Marano the stick in second place.  Marano closed the gap down a bit and split 55.1 and gave Brian Willett a chance to get the victory. Willett, standing like a statue when Marano came into the zone with the baton, received it and started his chase.  Fighting a strong wind on the backstretch, Willett bided his time and then just like in the mile, he struck during the last 100 meters (eerily similar to how his coach generally tells him how to race).  Willett crossed the line and split a 55.0 and the team combined to run 3:41.2 to break the school record from last year that was set at the state qualifier.  Congrats guys, well done.

Four of the boys will run the 4x4 on Saturday at Penn Relays.  Injuries will determine in part who is on

4/23 was the Mercy girls Dual Meet against Center Moriches.  Center Moriches came in as one of the leagues stronger teams.  The Monarchs were missing a few key point scorers in captain Sasa Vann who is nursing a knee injury and Delina Auciello who had SAT review.  The other girls more than picked up the slack.

Meg Donnelly continued her breakout senior season and immediately cut into the 8 point deficit that Mercy acquired from not having Pole Vault.  Donnelly has shown great consistency around the 33 foot mark in the Triple Jump.  She ended up with a 32'7 best to take first with Senior Terry Spath nabbing third with a 24'7.  Spath has plenty more distance in her, her 24'7 came with her take off foot well behind the "board".

Donnelly quickly scooted over to the 100 hurdles start to join teammates Tori Tremble (captain) and Francesca Viccari.  Tremble continued her undefeated hurdles streak in the league with a comfortable win over CM's first girl who unfortunately fell several times.  Donnelly and Viccari followed up in the next heat to complete the sweep of the event and scoring 9 valuable points in the team score.

Next up was the 1500 where Senior Captain Lauren Valle waited to run against two of CM's best distance runners.  Valle waited patiently during the middle laps and coming off the last turn used a plethora of energy to blow by the two CM girls who led most of the race.  Valle finished in 5:30.5, a season best time on a windy and cold day.  Ashley Yakoboski finished in 5:54 followed by Tiffany Holahan and Jen Perugi in 6:10 and 6:12.

Only two girls competed in the 400 meters but they did quite well and scored four points between them.  Freshman Delaney Macchirole took second in 66.9 and Junior Celia Hague followed right behind in 70.3.

During the 100, Tremble sweet talked her coaches into letting her participate and it was a good thing she did.  She scored her second win of the meet and was followed closely by teammate Danisha Carter who took second.  Carter is in her first year of track but is excelling in the 100 and 200 as well as the relays.

Colleen Edwards fought through the wind to score a win in the 1500 walk.  Jackie Read just missed the ten minute barrier, mostly due to the fact that she didnt tie her shoes before the race.  Finishing the race with neon green laces flopping all over the track surely cost her the two seconds she needed.

CM and Mercy both had a handful of girls in the 800.  It turned out to be a dominating victory for Senior Captain Emily Venesina.  Venesina continued her great senior spring season by blasting the second lap in 74 seconds to take the win in a best of season time of 2:31.7.  Katrina Thompson is rounding back into shape quicker than anticipated after a shin injury to be the second Monarch across the line in 2:45.  7th grade newcomer Siobhan Merrill ran a 2:51 to finish a bit back.

Carter led the monarchs in the 200 and ran a 28.4.  A personal best time for her.  Julianna Leonardo, and Meg Bassone were the next two Monarchs across the line in 31.3 or better.

Tremble rested up for a little and came up to the 400 hurdles looking for her third event win of the meet.  She cruised to victory in the one lap hurdle race in an easy 79.6.  Mercy had two girls in the second heat, Liz Hartman, and Shannon Nunez.  Despite having no idea how fast they were going, they almost helped Mercy sweep the event, just missing it by a couple of seconds.

8th Grade wunderkind Meg Tuthill ran a 30 second personal best in the 3000 while defeating the defending small school champion in the event.  She ran her last 800 in 2:52 to win in 11:46.  Still a novice at the event in terms of experience, Tuthill is surely ready for a big performance this Saturday at the Westhampton meet.

Catherine Andes broke through in the throws.  After spending an inordinate amount of time in the 25 foot range, Andes chucked the large metal shot 27 feet 9 inches.  She also threw the discus 75 feet 9 inches. The discus mark will get her on the best of season list.

Donnelly achieved a new personal best in the high jump by leaping 4'8 to take first over CM first girl.  Carrie Gehring and Delaney Macchirole tied for third and split the point between them.

Mercy  had the meet in hand for the relays but still pulled out two of three relays by winning the 4x1 and 4x4 despite sitting a few of their main girls.  The Monarchs have now improved to 4-0 and continue their undefeated dual meet streak.  They compete next at the Penn Relays on Thursday and at the Westhampton Beach invitational.
